Meet Lulu
The Founder of Lulu & Nat

Lulu, take us back to where it all began—how did a move to Mumbai almost 20 years ago spark the idea for Lulu & Nat?
The journey really began when my husband Nat and I moved to Mumbai nearly two decades ago. It was a big life change—one of those rare opportunities that felt adventurous and completely unknown. Living in India was transformative. It opened my eyes to a different pace of life and reconnected me with a world of vibrant colour, print, and craft that I had always loved but hadn’t been surrounded by so intensely before. It was in Mumbai that the idea for Lulu & Nat first took root—almost organically—born from the inspiration all around us and the desire to create something that celebrated that beauty in a modern, accessible way.
During your time in India, you and Nat encountered some incredible traditional crafts. Can you share how those experiences shaped your creative direction and the vision for the brand?
Absolutely. India has such a rich and layered textile history—every region has its own heritage and techniques. While we were working on a project in Jaipur, we were lucky enough to meet some amazing craftspeople who introduced us to block printing, embroidery, and handwoven textiles. These weren’t just techniques—they were stories, passed down through generations. I was completely drawn to the idea of using those ancient skills in a fresh, contemporary way. That’s still at the heart of everything we do at Lulu & Nat: honouring traditional craftsmanship while reimagining it with colour, joy, and playfulness that fits into everyday life.
As Creative Director, you lead the design and production process. How do you approach maintaining the balance between traditional craftsmanship and creating joyful, modern collections?
It’s definitely a balance I’m very conscious of. My role as Creative Director involves overseeing the entire process—from designing collections to working closely with our artisans across India to bring them to life. I spend a lot of time considering how each print, motif, or silhouette can feel joyful and current, while still allowing the craft itself to shine. Everything is made in small batches using hand-crafted methods, and we keep production slow and intentional. That way, the integrity of the process is preserved—and every piece feels special and considered. It’s about creating things that are beautiful, practical, and that people will love and keep for years.
And what about Nat—how does he support the business behind the scenes, and what does your creative partnership look like in practice?
Nat is very much the other half of Lulu & Nat. While I focus on the creative direction and product design, he brings a different but equally important skill set. With his background in interior and retail design, Nat has a real talent for brand experience and storytelling—from how a collection is photographed and presented, to how it's packaged and delivered to customers. He also takes on the role of operations manager, making sure everything behind the scenes runs smoothly—whether that’s coordinating logistics or managing production timelines. We’re a real team. It’s collaborative and dynamic, and I think the blend of our strengths is what has helped the brand grow and evolve while staying true to its roots.
