Calcutta Diaries - March 25
On my last visit to India I was lucky enough to have a short stay in Calcutta - The City of Joy. I really enjoyed my short time here and would like to go back next time for longer. The purpose of my trip was to source Kantha bedspreads which this region is well known for. If you are thinking of visiting, here are a handful of tips on places to stay, visit and shop….
I was lucky enough to stay at Calcutta Bungalow.
For an authentic Cool stay this is the best place to stay. A restored 1920’s townhouse representative of a golden era in Calcutta architecture. In the heart of the Bangali part of the City that the British referred to as the Black Town. A quick half an hour drive from the airport. Six well-appointed bedrooms with all modern amenities. Tastefully and lovingly decorated by celebrated local designer Swarup Dutta. Book ahead as it gets very booked up. The staff are really friendly and helpful. The best time of year to visit Calcutta is November to February. Next time I visit and on my bucket list is to do a walking street food tour and taste the famous food. Meant to be some of the best street food in India.
Shops to visit, the Kantha store for hand stitched kantha bedspreads.
For a delicious lunch and shop in their store visit The Sienna Store, everything is handmade in Calcutta - well worth the visit!
